You Can Customize Your IKEA Speakers by 3D Printing These Playful Add-Ons

It’s official—the future is here: “Hydropanels” can make water out of thin air; you can live in a smart home community; Tostitos is selling jars of salsa made with real avocados. And now you can customize your IKEA speakers by 3D printing playful and functional ad-ons.

Sweedish audio tech company Teenage Engineering designed the Frekvens collection for IKEA, which includes portable speakers and LED spotlights that react to sound. It also features a tripod stand that the speakers and lights can attach to, so you can build your own unique set up. “It’s a playful collection that you can easily scale up or down to suit your needs,” Creative Design Leader of IKEA Sweden Michael Nikolic said in a press release.

Since the collection will only be available at select IKEA stores starting this month, Teenage Engineering decided to make the line of speakers and spotlights more modular and accessible. The company spent weeks drawing up 3D prints of 20 bright, playful “Frekvens hacks” that you can download from the website and 3D print to further personalize your sound system and lighting.

The files come with ready-to-print models, photos, and assembly instructions of the ad-ons. Some include red and blue handles that you can attach to the top of your speakers to make them easier to carry. The “rooster” is a yellow stand that looks like rooster legs. You can attach a blue handle and cup holder to your speaker with the “take away.” With the “carry on,” you can print green wheels and a handle that can transport multiple speakers and lights together.

If you don’t own a 3D printer, you can 3D print these “frekvens hacks” at some UPS stores.
