Customer Leaves $10K Tip At Michigan Restaurant & The Reason Is So Sweet
Workers at a Michigan restaurant were left in complete shock after an unexpected act of kindness from a customer. NBC Chicago reports that earlier this month, a highly generous person left a $10,000 tip on a $32 bill after dining at The Mason Jar Cafe in Benton Harbor, Michigan.
According to the Grand Rapids, Michigan-based station WOOD-TV, the manager of The Mason Jar Cafe revealed that he was so taken aback by the kind gesture that he approached the man to confirm the enormous tip.
“Absolute disbelief to begin with. We went back and forth. I had a conversation with him. He wanted to proceed. [The server] was absolutely shocked," manager Tim Sweeney told WOOD-TV.
What makes this story even more moving is the reason behind the $10,000 tip. The mystery tipper stopped by The Mason Jar Cafe while in town for a friend's funeral, and it turns out that the tip was his way of paying tribute to his friend's memory.
The Instagram account for The Mason Jar Cafe shared a photo of the receipt, as well as a heartfelt caption.
"In a time where so much is happening, we wanted to share and thank the person who did this life changing act. Things can feel real heavy sometimes, but this was such an amazing act to have seen first hand in our restaurant," they wrote.
Although the tip was given to the man's server, she opted to share the money with the other eight people on staff at the time.
"It was just really an act of kindness that impacted so many people," said server Paige Mulick.
Update: According to the Detroit Free Press, the inspiring story of generosity has taken a turn, and the server who received the tip has been fired. "The employee said in a now-deleted Facebook post that 'drama ensued' after the $10,000 tip was shared, 'and in an attempt to diffuse the situation and resolve any rumors, things became even worse.'"
In a since-deleted Facebook post, the cafe owners said that the decision to terminate the server's employment was unrelated to the $10,000 tip.
