In Custom Collina Strada, Halsey Brings Sustainability to the Red Carpet

Halsey doesn’t do fashion by numbers. When the singer-songwriter and her stylist Zoe Costello settle on a look, it has to be original—and at last night’s Aria Awards in Sydney, Australia, the pair outdid themselves with a series of custom pieces from cult New York label Collina Strada. On the red carpet, that meant making an entrance in a white ballgown skirt covered in a scribble print worn with a matching crop top. Inside the event, she made a quick change into a corset top and pencil skirt, splashed with cool-toned watercolors. Art has played an essential role in Halsey’s creative development—if you haven’t seen her painting her way through performances of “Graveyard” or “Eastside,” do yourself a favor and Google it—and both outfits channeled that side of her persona with brio.

For Collina Strada designer Hillary Taymour, the challenge was reflecting the spirit of Halsey and the artistic nature of her tour. The first custom red carpet design drew inspiration from the brand’s Spring 2020 collection and its vibrant motifs, while also adding entirely new elements. “I took the idea from last season’s runway scribble design, and thought it would be fun to use that on a beautiful gown,” shared Taymour via email. “I worked with my friend Sasha Melynchuk to make it. It looked unexpected, and the true princess version of Collina Strada.”

Not only did the look introduce Collina Strada’s sustainable and socially conscious ethos into a space that could use more of both concepts, but the hand-painted and ethically created outfits were the fashion highlight of the evening—and the perfect complement to one of pop’s most daring style stars.
