‘The Curse’ Season 2 Is an Uncomfortable Possibility

WE HAVE FINALLY made our way out of the maze that is Showtime's bizarre satirical dramedy, The Curse. After the mental gymnastics it took to understand the first season, do we need a second season?

Full disclosure: The Curse is a tough watch. Somehow, a show about an incompatible husband and wife —Whitney (Emma Stone) and Asher Siegel (Nathan Fielder)— filming a show in Española, New Mexico called Green Queen about selling people ultra energy efficient homes turned into the most intentionally cringe-worthy series on television. Jokes about infidelity and unrequited love linger with no laughter and only tense silence to fill the space. When Asher is “cursed” by a young girl he tried to take a $100 donation back from (initially doing so at the urging of Dougie, the eccentric producer of the show played by Benny Safdie) it sets off an unfortunate chain of events that ends in him being ripped from Earth (Seriously, this show gets really weird). Whitney pays for whatever people in the town steal from a local denim store instead of calling the cops, as a way to assuage her gentrifier guilt, and still comes out known as a slumlord. Asher bonds with her father over their micropenises and more absurdism than anyone ever really needs. But, ultimately, it's a show about flawed people unsuccessfully fighting their worst selves.

Safdie plays Dougie Schecter, a morally bankrupt TV producer who trivializes Asher and Whitney's marital problems for content because he's dead inside after his wife died in a car while he was driving drunk. Stone earned a Golden Globe nomination for being a magnificently heinous pseudo-philanthropist whose obsession with her public perception borders on disassociative personality disorder. Very few people on the show are likable, but by the end, they become understandable. It's just not entirely clear if returning for more mind-bending humor is worth it or feasible.

Will there be a Season 2 of The Curse?

Practically speaking, a second season of The Curse is a bit unlikely. The Curse was only Stone's second TV series where she's been the lead actress in the last 15 years, and she'll likely be busy filming Cruella 2. Fielder still has a second season of The Rehearsal to film after it was renewed nearly 18 months ago. Safdie's working on an MMA film for A24 starring Dwayne Johnson and a boxing series for HBO. These schedules could find harmony with one another in the future, but don't expect your 2025 to be back in Española watching a second season of Green Queen.

Narratively speaking, the finale leaves the door open for a second season. Asher mentioned they were doing a second season of the show in the finale, and Dougie was already getting footage of Asher as he literally clung to his last moments on Earth. Then there's Asher and the child Whitney gave birth to. For an unexplained reason, Asher ended the season with an unknown force yanking him from Earth into space in the weirdest scene of the show. By the time he reached space, he appeared immobile and dead. But the laws of gravity mean nothing to this show, so why would the laws of death?

As for the child, it's not entirely confirmed that it is Asher's baby. The season finale simply starts with Whitney being pregnant after losing a child to an ectopic pregnancy earlier in the season. The doctor tells her she can try again in the future, and all signs point to it being Asher's child. However, Whitney spent most of this season fighting back disdain for her husband before a tearful reconciliation of sorts after Asher watched Whitney essentially say she was unhappy in their marriage. She may have cried, but those could be tears from the realization that she's trapped in a relationship that "looks good on paper," as Asher says, and we all know how much Whitney likes how things look on the outside regardless of what's actually going on inside.

Whether it's filming a second season of Green Queen after Asher's death, looking into how Whitney got pregnant, or exploring how she'll reconcile the dangers of her passive home with publicly tying her image to it, there's more than enough for a second season—if those involved feel like trying.
