Mads Pedersen gave another reminder of his strength in this year's Vuelta a Espana on Friday, pulling off a third stage win in the event. His Trek-Segafredo team rode superbly during the stage to limit and then eliminate a dangerous breakaway, before setting the former world champion up for a big result in Talavera de la Reina.

Pedersen received strong assistance inside the final kilometer to bring back a dangerous move by Groupama FDJ's Miles Scotson, with Pedersen then launching and holding off Fred Wright (Bahrain-Victorious), Gianni Vermeersch (Alpecin-Deceuninck), Ben Turner (Ineos Grenadiers) and Mike Teunissen (Jumbo-Visma).

The top ten was completed by Jonas Koch (Bora-Hansgrohe), Omer Goldstein (Israel-Premier Tech), Raul Garcia Pierna (Equipo Kern Pharma), GC contender Miguel Angel Lopez (Astana Qazaqstan) and Dylan van Baarle (Ineos Grenadiers).

The general classification remained as it was, with race leader Remco Evenepoel (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl) holding his 2:07 cushion over Enric Mas (Movistar Team). He is a comfortable 5:14 over the rider in third, Juan Ayuso (UAE Team Emirates), who may well be focused on a multi-rider battle for third place in Madrid.

Lopez lurks just 42 seconds behind him, with Carlos Rodriguez (Ineos Grenadiers) and Joao Almeida (UAE Team Emirates) at 1 minute 35 and two minutes respectively.

Thymen Arensman (Team DSM), Ben O'Connor (Ag2r Citroen), Rigoberto Uran (EF Education-EasyPost) and Jai Hindley (Bora-Hansgrohe) are further back and will scrap for the other places in the top ten.

Pedersen's win further added to his massive lead in the points classification. He is now on 379 points, 205 ahead of Wright and 246 ahead of Marc Soler (UAE Team Emirates).

Richard Carapaz (Ineos Grenadiers) added five more points to his lead in the king of the mountains competition and now has 50 points. Mas is on 26 and Arensman is on 23.

The youth classification is dominated by Evenepoel, who is 5:14 ahead of Ayuso and 6:49 in front of Rodriguez.

UAE Team Emirates remains best team, with Ineos Grenadiers second and Bahrain-Victorious third.
