I Curled My Hair 5 Different Ways in a Week — Here's What Happened

From Cosmopolitan

Unlike most people, I've never strived for those cascading Disney Princess curls. I like to add waves to my hair with my flat iron or I just let my hair air-dry — pretty ringlets have never been my thing because (1) they take too long and (2) they're way too girly for me.

Still, I wondered if there was a whole world of curly-haired goodness that I was missing out on, so I decided to try styling my hair with a different curl/wave-making hot tool every day for an entire week.

Here's what happened:

For perspective, here's what my hair looks like with no product:

Let's do this.

Day 1: Velvet Curling Wand

When I do feel like going for a ~fancy~ curl, I always grab a wand, so I wondered how this weird upgrade would help the process.

When the wand actually worked, it made a nice curl that I actually really liked. Unfortunately, the tool itself was super glitchy. It comes with an automatic off setting, which literally turned the wand off about every 60 seconds. I'd curl one strand, admire the curl, and then the next one would be limp as though I hadn't touched it. It took me longer than it should have to realize that the iron was turning off by itself...

Day 2: Flat Iron

In my humble hair opinion, nothing creates the perfect relaxed wave like a flat iron. It's my go-to, because you can use it to make whatever type of curl you're feeling that day. Sometimes I use it to bend my hair Lucy Hale-style and other days I go for a full messy wave.

For day two of my challenge, I chose a full curl with straightened ends (my trick for keeping my lob from looking mom). Per usual, my flat iron is my fave tool. I can customize my look, instead of rocking cookie-cutter curls. Plus, it only takes me 10 minutes to do my whole head.

Day 3: Crimping Iron

This massive crimper is an updated version of Lizzie McGuire's fave tool. The look was pretty crazy, but I actually kind of liked it. The volume was fun and after a few hours, the crimps fell out a bit, so my look was more chill.

The crimper was easy to use, but super time-consuming. You can't slide it down your strand, like you would with a flat iron. Instead, you have to manually crimp each inch of your hair.

Once I was done, I flipped my part over to the opposite side of my head for even more crazy volume. Watch here:

Day 4: Flat Curling Wand

Since the wand had a flat shape, I thought the curls would be super tight spirals, but they actually looked more like waves.

The finished look was loose and pretty, but with my super short strands, the barrel was way too big. I think I'll save this one for when I (eventually) grow my hair out again — it would do wonders on a long, flowing mane. I like it because it gives a chill wave, instead of a ringlet curl, like most wands.

Day 5: Automatic Beach Waver

The Beach Waver gave me the most gorgeous curls, which isn't surprising considering it's Victoria's Secret Angel-approved. I'd say it was my favorite look of the week – apart from my flat iron curls.

Even though the styling was bomb, like the velvet wand, the automated feature that was supposed to make curling easier, actually made it way more complicated. Plus, the process of clipping in my hair, then winding it up, took much longer than it would have to curl it with a normal wand. There's also a forward and backward button you can use to change the direction of your curls. I used it wrong every time and almost ripped my hair out because of it. 😖
