Your Qs About ‘The Diplomat’ Season 2, AnsweredNetflix

The Diplomat is the latest Netflix show taking the world by storm. It truly has all the makings of a *chef’s kiss* thriller series: high-stakes political dealings? ✅ A roller-coaster relationship? ✅ A dose of comic relief to get you through those tense moments? ✅✅✅ All these iconic components are thanks to The Diplomat’s showrunner, Deborah Cahn, who just gave some insight into the next chapter of the series. 👀

In an interview with the Hollywood Reporter’s TV’s Top 5 podcast, Deborah—like everyone else—expressed her hopes for a season 2. “I certainly like long-form stories,” she began. “I like being able to write about minutiae and the little odd moments of people’s lives and their worlds. So I like long-form storytelling. I certainly hope it continues. And I have a lot of ideas about where it would go. But we’ll see. We shall see what happens.”

But first: What is The Diplomat about?

Without giving *too* much away, The Diplomat stars Keri Russell as Kate Wyler, a no-BS—you guessed it!—diplomat who is named ambassador to the U.K. suddenly after an international crisis between several global superpowers kicks off. In the midst of everything, Kate has to juggle staying afloat in an entirely new environment and her relationship with her husband Hal—who is played by Rufus Sewell—, a former ambassador who low-key has a power struggle issue now that his wife is the one calling all the important shots. (Ugh.)

And though we won't get into how season 1 concludes, the eight-episode arc ended in a truly 🤯 cliffhanger that left viewers wanting more.

Has The Diplomat been renewed for season 2 yet?

YES. And it's no surprise, given the show’s massive success. And Deborah has actually signed an overall Netflix deal, making things pretty interesting. Of the contract, the streamer's Vice President and Head of Drama Development Jinny Howe mused, “I’ve seen firsthand Deb’s incredible work on shows including The West Wing. She knows how to tell an amazing story, with character depth, stakes and surprises, all of which she’ll bring to The Diplomat. We’re thrilled to welcome Deb to Netflix.”

Though the exact deets of this agreement are under wraps, Deadline *does* reveal it is comprised of a “multi-year overall deal with the streamer for series and other projects.” TL;DR: We're getting a second season.

When will The Diplomat season 2 come out?

Following Netflix's timeline for the first season (in which they announced the show in January 2022 and released it 15 months later), season 2 miiiiight be available as quickly as summer 2024 ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. Brb, currently manifesting that I get to see my fave characters again soon. And speaking of characters on the show....

Has anyone said anything about season 2?

Glad you asked! However...

WARNING: Major spoilers about the season 1 ending ahead!!!

In a recent interview with Tudum, Rufus Sewell addressed his character's fate when asked about whether the car explosion left any survivors, saying, “I hope so.”

“I hope we all survive. What can I say? I mean, I loved the dramatic turn. And I just have to hope (a) that there’ll be a second season, and (b) that everyone will be okay. But the drama needs to be real,” he added.

The actor also hinted that he's hopeful for the project to make a comeback for multiple seasons, saying, “All I know is that if you resolve it one way or another too quickly, we’re screwed...I like to think there are enough problems to last us [a few seasons]. Who knows? I would like someone with a better imagination than mine to take over on that rather than follow my dumb suggestion.”

And that's pretty much all we know for now! But make sure to check back here for any more juicy intel on the potential second installment of The Diplomat.
