New ‘culinary hotspot’ brings oysters to SLO Public Market. Take a look at the menu

A new oyster and small plates bar is bringing seafood to the San Luis Obispo Public Market.

Peixes — “the latest culinary hotspot in town” — opened in the South Higuera Street marketplace in November, offering “inventive combinations of shareable plates, highlighting fresh oysters, regional and global seafood and delightful libations,” according to a restaurant news release.

It’s the second business endeavor in the SLO Public Market for executive chef Omar Rojas; he also recently opened Bishop’s Market, a farmers-market-style shop selling fresh produce, meats and fish.

The name for the new restaurant comes from the Portuguese word for “fish” and is pronounced “pesh-ē,” according to the release.

Peixes will feature a rotating menu meant to take diners on “a culinary journey that celebrates the rich traditions of Spain and Portugal,” the release said. It will include shareable plates with Mariscadora tinned fish, locally sourced seafood and customizable dishes like the Peixes couscous bowl.

It will also include a raw bar offering a selection of fresh oysters, ahi tuna tartare and zesty shrimp ceviche, the release said.

“Our seafood selection embodies the essence of the ocean — a fusion of freshness, flavor and craftsmanship that transports guests to coastal shores with every bite,” Rojas said in the release. “Each dish on the menu is a testament to our commitment to quality and our passion for delivering an unforgettable dining experience.”

Visitors can enjoy their meals in its casual dining room or on heated outdoor patio. They can also enjoy a selection of in-house spirits and wines from Waylan Wines Co. in Los Olivos.

It is open Wednesday through Monday, from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. with extended hours until 9 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.
