Crunchyroll Just Made Heaps of Anime Free

Crunchyroll is pretty much the go-to source for anime streaming outside of Japan, with a gigantic library of thousands of titles. It’s not the only one of course – Netflix and Disney+ have their fair share of anime too – but with the rising costs of streaming subscriptions, many are looking for a way to save some money without missing out on the things they love.

Thankfully, Crunchyroll also has a secret weapon: ad-supported episodes of some of the biggest anime on the planet. It comes with a few caveats of course. Obviously you’ll have to watch some ads, you can’t expect to get everything for nothing, and not every episode of every series is available.

If it’s an ongoing series, usually the most recent episode or the current season is locked behind a Premium subscription, while the earlier episodes are available. Others only offer the first 12-13 episodes — just enough to get a taste, and see if it’s worth subscribing for. One Piece seems to be the exception, offering pretty much all of its episodes to free users — something the live-action adaptation certainly won’t be doing.

Free users are in for a treat this month too, since Crunchyroll added a bunch of anime to its free, ad-supported viewing. There are some big series in here, like Chainsaw Man, Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury, and SpyxFamily, but in most cases it’s just the first dozen or so episodes available. If you’re looking for dubs too you’re going to be disappointed, as none of the new additions offer more than three dubbed episodes.
