Crunchyroll announced Bones 25: Dreaming Forward, a new four-part documentary delving into the history of Bones, the studio behind iconic anime including Cowboy Bebop and Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood. Bones 25 premieres in full on Crunchyroll on Feb. 13, 2024, following January’s debut of Bones’ new anime, Metallic Rouge.

The news follows Crunchyroll’s announcement that the studio will close Funimation, removing access to any purchases made on the platform, in 2025 and double its yearly cost.

“Studio Bones is behind some of the most iconic anime of a generation,” Asa Suehira, Crunchyroll’s chief content officer, said in a press release. “It’s only fitting that anime fans will want to have an unprecedented look inside their creators and studios. To give fans that look, we’ve partnered with a great documentary storyteller in DeltaRocket to turn the camera around and spotlight one of Japan’s great anime storytellers.”

The documentary covers Bones’ history from the studio’s founding up to the present and its work on Metallic Rouge and features 30 people involved with the studio, including president Masahiko Minami and Mob Psycho 100 author ONE. The episodes are:

  • The History of Bones

  • Style and Originality

  • Successful Adaptation

  • Metallic Rouge: The Future of Bones

Metallic Rouge is currently airing on Crunchyroll, with new episodes each week for the next seven weeks.
