Is Cruel Summer based on a true story?

The short answer is no, it's not. While it seems like something that totally could have happened in the 90s, the idea is an original concept by creator Bert V. Royal who is also behind the iconic comedy Easy A.

The show takes place over three different summers and goes back and forth between Jeanette and Kate's points of view throughout the years. Although the songs, fashion, and pop culture references are all a part of 90s culture, that's pretty much the only thing that the show has that's real. While the rest of the plot could have been inspired from real life cases, the creators haven’t revealed that yet.

In fact, the town of Skylin, Texas also does not exist and is likely based off of several towns in the state.

There's a chance that we'll see more clues and inspiration from real life cases come up later on in the season, but for now, we can rest easy knowing that this didn't happen to anyone IRL.
