Twenty-four years after the movie and seven after the idea began development (that's the 2016 network version), Cruel Intentions is finally, actually, becoming a series.

The Dangerous Liaisons update starring Reese Witherspoon, Ryan Phillippe, and Sarah Michelle Gellar has long been considered a ’90s classic and one of the best dark teen movies in the genre. It takes place among rich NYC high schoolers toward the end of summer break and involves, famously, a stepsibling sex bet. The new series will be different but, hopefully, will have the same twisted heart of the movie. Here's everything we know:

The premise

The new series is set at a prestigious university in Washington, DC, according to Deadline, and like the original is led by two “ruthless” stepsiblings hell-bent on maintaining their positions atop the social order. Following a hazing incident, the school's Greek Life is on the line, and the stepsiblings make it their mission to keep the tradition going. It's implied that the target of their manipulations is the daughter of the vice president.

“We are so excited to get to work together to continue the legacy of Cruel Intentions, a film that remains beloved by so many—including us!” showrunners Sara Goodman and Phoebe Fisher said in a statement, per The Hollywood Reporter. “We promise to make this next iteration as fun, irreverent, and boundary-pushing as the original, and are grateful to our partners at Original Film, Sony, and Amazon MGM Studios for trusting us to keep it Cruel.”

The cast

The lead manipulator will be played by Savannah Lee Smith, last seen as Monet in Max's Gossip Girl remake. It's a fitting choice, given that the original Gossip Girl owes a lot to the original Cruel Intentions, and Smith has proved herself adept at playing a high society schemer.

THR reports that Sarah Catherine Hook, Zac Burgess, Sara Silva, Khobe Clarke, John Harlan Kim, and Brooke Lena Johnson round out the main cast, along with Sean Patrick Thomas, who played a sincere and seductive music tutor in the ’99 movie, but will have a different role this time around. Recurring actors include Claire Forlani, Nikki Crawford, Isabella Tagliati, Zeke Goodman, and Jon Tenney.

Premiere date and more

The adaptation will be eight episodes and will run on Amazon Prime. No premiere date has been set.
