As it would happen, Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden isn’t the only royal to opt for a power suit for a public engagement. For decades, women in royal European families have fashioned the power suit as a contemporary fashion statement for daytime commitments. There have also been rare instances when royal women have worn suits on more formal occasions.

Among her many iconic looks, Princess Diana made the case for the power suit in April 1988 when she fashioned a Catherine Walker suit with a Hackett waistcoat. In the decades since, royal women like Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, Queen Letizia of Spain and Kate Middleton have opted for the power suit. It’s a major trend that’s become a significant part of Catherine, the Princess of Wales’ royal wardrobe.

The power suit has a long history of statement-making moments on and off the runway. Once an essential piece of men’s wardrobes, the power suit has gone through a complete evolution. Royal women, whose styles often encompass simple elegance, have revitalized the power suit, giving the look a moment in the sun on more than one occasion. As these women continue their royal duties, more interpretations of the power suit are surely in store.
