This month is sure to bring a slew of changes for Crown Princess Mary of Denmark, and while it's not likely to be the most dramatic of those shifts, one of the latest will be the loss of a major member of her glam squad. This week, the princess's longtime hairdresser Søren Hedegaard announced on Instagram at he will be stepping down from the position on January 14: the same day that Mary will take on the title of queen when her mother-in-law, Queen Margrethe, officially abdicates.

Along with a photo of himself preparing the princess's hair for another major royal changeover—the coronation of Britain's King Charles III in May 2023—Hedegaard shared that he will be moving on from his royal occupation to work for haircare brand Stuhr.

"With the end of 2023 and with a change of throne in view, I have also chosen a change in my life. On 14/1 2024 and after 23 years as HRH Crown Princess Mary’s Hairdresser, I am passing the baton on to the next generation. It has been 23 amazing and unforgettable years with memories and friendships that I will always carry in my heart," he wrote. "My life has always been colorful and changeable and will hopefully continue to be so in the years to come. My craft is my heart’s blood. Therefore, my job as Creative Director at STUHR is also the place where I will put all my energy and love for my profession in the future."

Hedegaard's sentiments echo those shared by Margrethe when she announced her plans to abdicate during her New Years speech when she explained that a 2023 surgery gave rise to thoughts of the future and ultimately the decision to step back and let her son, Crown Prince Frederik, take the throne.

While Frederik will take on the title of king, and his wife, Mary, will become queen, it has since been revealed that Margrethe will also maintain her current title.
