PERDIDO KEY, Fla. (WKRG) — A Gulf Coast tradition is back for its 40th anniversary: the Flora-Bama Interstate Mullet Toss!

Crowds from all over the country came to the Flora-Bama on day one of the Mullet Toss, ready to toss a mullet as far as they could across the Florida-Alabama state line.

Diane Crom, one of the attendees on day one said she came “All the way from Wisconsin.”

“We’re on vacation — it’s our first day we just got off the airplane,” Crom said.

Others came from Georgia, Montana, and other states to join in on the 40-year tradition.

And although everyone went in with the same goal of throwing the mullet as far as they could, both seasoned pros and first-times had their own strategy going into the toss.

Brittany Sutton, a visitor from Georgia, said she was trying not to throw it too far — her explanation: “I didn’t want to run and get it.”

Wisconsin visitor Debbie Lancour had a different strategy: watch and learn.

She said, “I’m kinda watching, I think we have to go overhand. Fold the fish in half maybe I don’t know.”

Lancour added, “I was thinking maybe like a football get that spiral going.”

And although everyone had a different strategy, some strategies did not work out so well.

“The fish are a little bit slipperier than they look, the sand got me, got a light breeze coming in from the west. Main factor. But we’ll be back next year,” Casey Jones of Montana said after tossing a mullet into the crowd.

But organizers explain that no matter the success of the throw, the fun is all for a good cause.

“You get one toss and you get one t-shirt but then we take that money and we donate back to the Drug and Alcohol Council, The Boys and Girls Clubs of Escambia County, and Baldwin County. We’ll raise about $30,000 to $40,000 on average each weekend for Mullet Toss,” Jenifer Parnell, marketing director of the Flora-Bama said.

Crowds will continue to pack the Flora Bama all weekend long, with the party continuing until Sunday.
