A Crisp, Edgy, and Eclectic Family Home
It was love at first sight when I first laid eyes on this California home designed by Amber Lewis of Amber Interiors on MyDomaine. From MyDomaine... Los Angeles–based interior designer Amber Lewis of Amber Interiors can do no wrong in our book (get familiar with her work, and we’re sure you’ll agree). In her latest project, the interiors visionary steered in a new direction that we can only hope to see more of: rock ’n’ roll. Decorating a new home for fashion trend forecaster Susan Anderson and her husband Timmy, a music producer, head of A&R at Capitol Records, and co-founding member of Ima Robot, the designer had the opportunity to mix her signature California-eclectic look with the edgy, fashion-forward accessories her clients had collected over time. The result? Laid back, boho, and impossibly cool.
“Our goal was to create a casual California aesthetic with rock ’n’ roll undertones,” Susan tells us. “We wanted a house that felt similar to the way we dress—lots of white, black, and leather—with a bohemian print direction.” With crisp, white paint and custom simple, solid sofas as a base, Lewis layered in vintage kilim rugs and pillows (both staples of her work) to ground the space and infuse a bit of pattern and worldly flair.
Her greatest discovery, Lewis tells us, was the black-and-white striped rug in the family room. “It was divine intervention; I was looking for one for months before I found it,” she says. “Sometimes this is how the cookie crumbles; it’s the last-minute finds that make the space amazing.”
Giving that rug a run for its money is a beautiful collection of furniture, both vintage and new, with lasting style. We love the midcentury black leather armchairs in the living room and the sycamore and leather bar stools in the kitchen, which were handmade in a studio in Philadelphia. “I didn’t want it to feel too serious or over-upholstered,” Susan tells us. “I also wanted to invest in great pieces I can take to the next house if we ever move—à la the leather safari chairs [in the master bedroom].”
Thoughtful choices in lighting, including fixtures by Apparatus Studio and Workstead, both New York–based makers, and Robert Ogden for Lostine, punctuate every room.
With the groundwork laid, Lewis did a remarkable job of bringing the space to life with a curated selection of the Anderson’s personal mementos and vintage music memorabilia. To the blind eye, it just looks cool, but for the Andersons, it makes the stunning space feel like home.
“The thing I loved about working with Amber is that she used all of our accessories we’ve collected throughout our marriage—a jackalope from a trip to Aspen, rock ’n’ roll posters I got as gifts for my husband, and lots of Hermès accessories I collected on fashion trips,” Susan says. “I feel like we had a great collaboration between cherished items I already owned mixed with her style.”
