Creator shares iPhone hack to improve microphone quality in noisy surroundings

Austin Tag (@austintag), a creator on TikTok, recently posted about an iPhone hack that he claims “more people need to know about.” Tag shared that with a relatively unknown feature on Apple devices, users can instantly improve their microphone quality.

Over 2.5 million people watched Tag’s video, with many users intrigued by the new possibilities.

“The feature is ‘Mic Mode,'” he says in the post, referring to the feature in the Control Center. “If you’re recording or on FaceTime and you swipe down on the upper right hand corner, you’ll see this button up here. You click on it and you’ll have ‘Standard,’ ‘Voice Isolation’ and ‘Wide Spectrum.’ I specifically want to highlight ‘Voice Isolation.’ This is the best.”

According to Apple, Voice Isolation “prioritizes your voice and blocks ambient noises,” which can only be used when recording or on a call. Tag says that when he uses FaceTime in the shower with this feature, it blocks out everything but his voice.

“It’s also good when you’re at an airport with your headphones in and you’re trying to FaceTime your friend or a busy coffee shop,” Tag says.

While it filters out ambient noises, there is still a downside to the Voice Isolation feature, some tech experts say.

“The tradeoff is that your voice definitely sounds more processed, but it always sounds processed through apps like FaceTime or Zoom,” wrote David Pierce in an article for the Verge.

As far as the feature itself, some of Tag’s viewers were already fans, while some were just finding out about it.

“I literally be telling my friends to do this cause I really don’t wanna hear her fan on high while we FaceTime,” replied @manicleomind.

“I knew it was there but never knew what it was for and was too lazy to look it up! So thank you for your service,” commented @mirandarogers898.

Another selection within the iPhone’s Mic Mode module is the Wide Spectrum feature. In this mode, more audio gets picked up, as the ambient noises around you are not filtered out. This would be helpful if someone was trying to show off the audio happening in their background in order to paint a clearer picture.

These features can be used on mobile and desktop, but are limited to devices that can run iOS 15 or later for FaceTime and iOS 16.4 on a regular phone call.

Once users find the setting that fits their needs, the microphone will remain in that mode, as the setting won’t change until it is manually switched back to the default setting.
