'Crazy Rich Asians' stars Tan Kheng Hua and Gemma Chan misidentified in publication's fashion roundup

Vogue misidentified Crazy Rich Asians stars Gemma Chan and Tan Kheng Hua during its fashion coverage of the Screen Actors Guild Awards. It’s the second time this month the publication has been called out for mixing up women of color.

Sunday’s gaffes were noted by Diet Prada on Instagram. The fashion account shared a screenshot of Chan labeled as Liv Lo, the wife of Crazy Rich Asians star Henry Golding, on the magazine’s website.

A second snap shows Tan Kheng Hua misidentified as Michelle Yeoh. In the screenshot, Diet Prada included Vogue’s apology two weeks ago for misidentifying Noor Tagouri as Noor Bukhari in its February 2019 print issue. The account highlighted one part of the magazine’s mea culpa, which read, “We also understand that there is a larger issue of misidentification in the media — especially among nonwhite subjects. We will try to be more thoughtful and careful in our work going forward…”

Noor Tagouri is a journalist and activist while Noor Bukhari is a Pakistani actress, director and model. Tagouri expressed how “heartbroken and devastated” she was at the error, saying that it was always a dream of hers to be featured in Vogue.

“I have been misrepresented and misidentified MULTIPLE times in media publications — to the point of putting my life in danger. I never, EVER expected this from a publication I respect SO much and have read since I was a child,” she wrote on Instagram. “Misrepresentation and misidentification is a constant problem if you are Muslim in America. And as much as I work to fight this, there are moments like this where I feel defeated.”

Vogue has yet to comment on the SAGs incident, and did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Yahoo Lifestyle.
