It's been several years since the announcement hit that Crazy Rich Asians, the hit 2018 film based on Kevin Kwan's novel of the same name, would be getting a sequel film. Yet while we're still waiting for that movie to debut (the film, based on Kwan's China Rich Girlfriend, is reportedly still in development) Deadline has reported today that there is another film in the Crazy Rich Asians universe in the works—a spin off.

Though the project is said to be in "early development" the publication reports that the movie will center on the characters Astrid Young Teo, played by Gemma Chan in the original movie, and her romance with Charlie Wu, portrayed by Harry Shum Jr. Whether or not the actors would reprise their roles for the film is not yet known.

The movie will reportedly be written by Jason Kim, the Emmy nominated producer and writer of HBO's Barry.

Per Deadline, "Kim came in with a dynamite pitch for the lovebirds’ story, and Warner Bros. swooned for it"; however the exact nature of the film's narrative has not been revealed. The second book in Kwan's Crazy Rich Asians trilogy, China Rich Girlfriend, includes elements of Astrid and Charlie's romance, so it's not currently clear whether that storyline would be removed from the in-development sequel to make up its own film, or if the two movies would be able to converge in some way.

No timeline has been announced for when the spin-off movie might hit theaters, but we will continue to update this post as more information becomes available.
