Cozy Boy Fall Is the Fashion Trend That's Taking Over Closets Everywhere

We sure love sweater weather.

Hot Girl Summer came and went, but if you love a seasonal theme, you’re in luck; according to Twitter account @joshcarlosjosh's viral tweet, Cozy Boy Fall has officially claimed the cooler weather, pushing oversized sweaters and roomy trousers to the forefront of our wardrobes (precisely where they belong).

The polar opposite of Hot Girl Summer, Cozy Boy Fall involves packing up your bodycon tanks and hip-hugging bottoms and saying buh-bye to risque cutouts. Anything that could be categorized as “flossing” is swapped out in favor of all things bulky, layered, and not at all body-conforming. But don’t mistake this anti-form-fitting aesthetic for frump. The goal is to be comfortable, but in a way that looks and feels elevated.

“It’s the epitome of the 'I’m not trying to look stylish' stylish look,” explains MiKADO personal styling advisor Jordan Stolch. “It’s filled with layers, thick fabrics, bulky styles, and cuts that fall away from the body — lots of cable knit sweaters paired with wider-leg wool trousers and loafers, longline cardigans mixed with matching jogger sets and tennis shoes, oversized shirt jackets styled with straight-leg denim and thin turtlenecks, and everything topped off with cozy socks, scarves, and hats.”

Under the umbrella of “Cozy Boy Fall” are categories of how the aesthetic can be achieved. Ahead, we’re breaking down some of our favorite Cozy Boy Fall looks from some of our favorite famous cozy boys.

Cozy Boy Staple: Dark Hues

Tom Hanks as corporate hotshot Joe Fox in You’ve Got Mail may have no chill when it comes to his business ventures, but when he’s out of the office, the man knows how to unplug and give in to the relaxed state that the Cozy Boy Fall aesthetic encourages. That said, Fox’s Cozy Boy staple isn’t a specific item of clothing, but rather a color palette. He leans into the moody hues of this time of year — think shades of brown, grey, black, and blue.

Cozy Boy Staple: Fisherman’s sweater

Chris Evans as Ransom Drysdale in this still from Knives Out is giving Billy Crystal as Harry Burns in When Harry Met Sally and we are here for it. If an oversized, cream, knit fisherman’s sweater doesn’t scream cozy boy fall, we don’t know what does. Just add a pair of straight-leg denim, sneakers or loafers, and a novel to flip through by the window and you’ve got the quintessential Cozy Boy Fall ensemble down pat.

Cozy Boy Staple: Flannels

Darren Barnet as Paxton Hall-Yoshida in the Netflix original series Never Have I Ever knows plaid prints and flannel materials go together like pumpkin and spice. But beyond the iconic autumnal clothing item’s cozy aesthetic, is its comfortable feel. With how much warmth the fabric gives off, you’ll want to stock up on a few of these babies in various colors for when temperatures start to plunge.

Cozy Boy Staple: Sweater Vests

Few men have rocked a sweater vest with more pizazz than Chandler Bing, so if you’re looking for easy layering options for this Cozy Boy Fall, look no further than Matthew Perry’s style in the memorable role. We especially love his pairing of a button-down shirt underneath the bulkier grandpa-esque wardrobe staple. Complete the look with a pair of roomy trousers, and don’t forget to roll up your sleeves, weather permitting.

Cozy Boy Staple: Knit Sweaters

Ignore the fact that, somehow, even in a bulky knit sweater, Channing Tatum’s muscular stature still comes through. Cozy Boy Fall isn’t about that, but it is about the heat such a sweater can provide; the perfect option for bitingly brisk autumn afternoons and evenings. But unlike Leo, you may want to size up for a roomier fit and the option to layer.

Cozy Boy Staple: A Plaid Coat

If there is any one coat we stan for Cozy Boy Fall, it’s Raymond Deagan’s plaid outerwear in Far From Heaven. It emits the same autumnal vibes as a gingham-patterned flannel, and is constructed like a shacket (only this coat has a button closure and pockets — details a lot of shackets lack). A must-have for weekends spent apple and pumpkin picking, hay riding, or nights gallivanting around haunted attractions.

Cozy Boy Staple: Turtlenecks

While snug, turtlenecks are cozy in that they trap heat when sharp winds are whipping from the decolletage up. Plus, turtlenecks make for excellent foundations for layering. Throw a crewneck sweatshirt overtop and channel Princess Diana’s iconic off-duty look from the 80s, or opt for lighter layers like cardigans and sweater vests that can comfortably fit under your outerwear. Patrick Dempsey’s character Andrew Hennings had the right idea in Sweet Home Alabama, for reference.

Cozy Boy Staple: Roomy Crewnecks

One of Anthony Michael Hall’s most memorable roles was his character Brian Johnson in the 1980s film The Breakfast Club. Viewers found him relatable next to the popular kids and rebellious stoner, but it was his lax Saturday detention look that we’re honing in on for Cozy Boy Fall. It doesn’t get much simpler than a roomy crewneck (undershirt optional) and khaki pants. It’s a basic outfit that can easily be enhanced with a puffer vest, scarf, or duster coat.

Cozy Boy Staple: Cardigans

This list would not be complete without the honorable mention of Fred Rogers of Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood, aka the original Cozy Boy. The man had countless cardigans in his wardrobe rotation, and he’d style them with a trifecta consisting of a button-down, tie, and pair of slacks. The finished product was professional, but comfortable, down to the change of shoes he’d do on camera.
