CoverGirl Is Now the Biggest Makeup Brand Granted the Leaping Bunny Seal by Cruelty Free International

Cruelty-free beauty is becoming more accessible and affordable than ever.

For years, it seemed that small, indie brands were the ones leading the charge to end animal testing — which was great, but it left many of us wondering when the biggest, most recognizable, and most influential companies would do more to help end the unnecessary practice. Recently, however, the Leaping Bunny seal has finally been making its way onto more and more labels, and now, CoverGirl has become the latest to earn that universally recognizable symbol of cruelty-free cosmetics manufacturing.

"Cruelty Free International is proud to present CoverGirl with the Leaping Bunny certification — the internationally recognized gold standard for cruelty-free designation," reads a press release. Cruelty Free International is the organization behind the familiar Leaping Bunny illustration seen on so many cruelty-free products. "No other certification program has the rigor that seeks to completely eliminate animal testing from a brand’s supply chain — it certifies that no CoverGirl products or ingredients are tested on animals, either by CoverGirl or its suppliers."

The release goes on to read, "At CoverGirl, we believe small steps can lead to big impact, especially in the beauty category. As an iconic beauty brand, we have the responsibility to drive the evolution we believe is critical to the overall health of the industry." CoverGirl, deemed the biggest color-cosmetics brand by the Nielsen Company, also released a short and sweet video to help spread the word about its new status.

CoverGirl isn't the only major beauty company that has helped bring cruelty-free products to drugstores lately. Unilever recently announced its support for a global ban on animal testing in the beauty industry, and one of its biggest brands, Dove, was certified as cruelty-free by PETA.

It's all good news for those who've been hoping for more accessible, less expensive cruelty-free beauty products — a goal CoverGirl says it's excited to help reach. "CoverGirl truly believes that cruelty-free cosmetics should be affordable and available to everyone — now it is," the brand writes. "The more people who can find and afford cruelty-free makeup, the better."
