Couples marry in 'Star Wars'-themed weddings before screening of 'The Rise of Skywalker'

A few diehard Star Wars fans turned the debut of the franchise’s final installment, The Rise of Skywalker, into a momentous occasion.

At the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema in Austin, Tex., two couples, Andy and Wendee Forbes and Matt and Mallory Anderegg, married in separate themed ceremonies in the lobby of the South Lamar Boulevard location before entering a screening. According to Alamo press materials, they wore Star Wars-inspired costumes and were flanked by Stormtroopers. Guests wielded light sabers and the wedding party marched along to John Williams’s score, as played by an on-site orchestra. Young attendees dressed as Princess Leia, Jedi and even a Baby Yoda — well, a baby dressed as the more mature Yoda.

The costumed officiant announced that each couple would be united in “galactic matrimony.” She had the brides and grooms swap specially written vows that called for them to care for each other “in peacetime and rebellion.”

“Ultimately, it requires both of you to put your trust trust in the force,” she told them. “For we should always remember that love is the true force that binds the galaxy together. May the force be with both of you.”

Both couples have made a tradition of attending the opening night of Star Wars movies at the theater over the years, according to the theater.

The newlyweds were far from the only ones to see The Rise of Skywalker on opening night. The movie took in more than $40 million at the domestic box office, enough to make it the fifth highest grossing Thursday release of all time.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker opens Friday. Tickets now on sale via Fandango.
