Couple That Met on 9/11 Celebrates 20th Wedding Anniversary

Nick and Diane Marson met when their plane was diverted to Newfoundland.

It can be hard to find light in the dark of a tragedy, but it’s not impossible. Just ask Nick and Diane Marson, a couple who met because their plane was diverted on September 11, 2001, and are celebrating their 20th wedding anniversary today.

Nick took to their joint Twitter account to share a photo from their living room wedding, which took place on September 7, 2002.

“20 years ago today Diane & I married here in our living room. ❤️Happy Anniversary my Sweetheart❤️Love you to the Moon and back💞 Stop the World💞,” he wrote. The latter is a reference to a song their characters sing in the hit musical Come From Away, which tells the story of Nick, Diane, and a number of others who were stranded—and hosted—in Newfoundland, Canada, for several days following the terrorist attacks in New York City.

Nick was traveling from the UK for a work conference, and Diane happened to be on the same plane on the way home from a family vacation. As reported by People in a previous interview, the two met when Nick took the empty cot next to Diane the first night. The two bonded over being single parents with adult children out of the house and spent most of their time walking around town together to distract themselves from the constant news coverage.

The two had such a connection that even the master of ceremonies at a screeching event, where visitors kiss a fish in order to become honorary Newfoundlanders, thought they were married.

Still, the two battled with survivor's guilt and kept their happiness together quiet for a long time. “We'd found something wonderful, and it did not seem appropriate that that had happened when more than 3,000 families had been devastated. It was something we kept to ourselves. You almost think, 'Pretend it didn't happen,’” Nick told People.

But as time moved on, they came to realize, “In the darkest of circumstances, good things can still happen."

Happy anniversary!
