Couple loses 230 pounds — thanks to $9K overseas surgery deal

UK couple traveled in August to Lithuania on a $9,000 "package deal," which included gastric sleeve operations, flights, hotels, recovery, a "handler" and even taxis.

They made a supreme change.

Glenn and Sophie Harris, 38 and 35, were terrified of dying young and leaving their kids orphans.

They weighed a combined 630 pounds, with Glenn estimating he was consuming around 3,500 calories a day by indulging in extra-large pizzas and 10 to 15 cans of Pepsi Max.

Their wake-up call came when Sophie realized she wouldn’t be able to continue treatment for Charcot joint — which causes swelling, inflammation, and redness in her left ankle — unless she dropped the pounds.

“I started off a lot heavier than my wife — but she’s also disabled and couldn’t keep having surgeries while gaining weight,” Glenn, an operations manager from Redditch, Worcestershire, explained to SWNS. “We decided we needed to make a drastic change, so [we] started looking into gastric bypass surgeries in Lithuania.”

The couple traveled on Aug. 17 to Vilnius, the country’s capital, on a $9,000 “package deal,” which included gastric sleeve operations, flights, hotels, recovery, a “handler” and even taxis.

In just six months, Glenn has gone from 357 pounds to 209 pounds and a 46-inch waist to a 34-inch waist.

Sophie, meanwhile, dropped from 272 pounds to 191 pounds and from a size 24 to 14-16.

“We just feel great now. We can do so much more as a couple, feeling like we have the confidence to go to clothes shops and try on new fashions,” Sophie gushed. “Health-wise it’s been great — we’ve got so much energy.”

Sophie said they were nervous about going abroad, “but we did lots and lots of research” before pulling the trigger.

A couple of months before the procedures, the couple consulted with surgeons in the UK to ensure they were making the right decision.

They also met with their Lithuanian handler and surgeon on Zoom — he recommended the package deal.

“We used our savings and borrowed some money from family, which is all paid back now,” Glenn said.

Three weeks before the operations, they were told to reduce their daily caloric intake to 500 and consume mainly protein.

They ate steaks, chicken breasts, and lamb chops, which left them feeling sluggish and “hangry.”

Their recovery plan lasted 10 weeks, but they went back to work in just five days.

“The diet was very, very samey — after living on just meat before the operations, we were only able to drink half a cup of water a day, for the first two weeks,” Glenn lamented.

“After two weeks, we were on lots of purees, yogurts, protein powder, and bone broth,” he added. “We liked to blend up those tins of sausages and spaghetti.”

Glenn said the pair weren’t allowed solid food until the six-week mark.

They were losing about 8 pounds a week and gaining “loads more energy.”

They say they work out separately and have different personal trainers, so far eschewing surgery to remove loose skin.

“We wanted to invest in ourselves individually but emotionally we’re in it together,” Glenn said. “Ever since we had the surgery, we put a couple’s tracking chart on the wall — we sold all our clothes together and we go shopping for new outfits together.”
