A Couple Just Got Engaged on the Met Gala Steps

Love is in the air at the 2022 Met Gala.

Tonight, a couple had a full-on public proposal while walking up the carpeted steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

In footage captured from TODAY and Entertainment Tonight, Commissioner of New York City Cultural Affairs Laurie Cumbo and her now fiancé had walked about halfway up the steps before her partner dropped to one knee and pulled out a Tiffany blue engagement ring box, to Cumbo's surprise. She accepted the ring and the two shared a kiss and a tearful embrace.

It's not the first time that the Met Gala steps have been witness to a marriage proposal.

Back in 2018, 2 Chainz dramatically dropped to one knee to propose to his partner of five years, Nakesha Ward. The rapper had previously proposed to his longtime girlfriend in another public spectacle five years prior during the 2013 BET Awards, according to People, though the couple hadn't officially tied the knot since then.

"It’s crazy, he just gave me this! So happy! I love it," Ward told reporters on the red carpet at the time, per the outlet.

This year, the Met Gala its "In America" theme with a take on "Gilded Glamour." Following last year's "A Lexicon of Fashion," the second part of the exhibition, dubbed "An Anthology of Fashion," will focus on "sartorial narratives that relate to the complex and layered histories" of the nation's formative eras, per the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Gala hosts include Blake Lively, Ryan Reynolds, Regina King, and Lin-Manuel Miranda.
