This Couple Was Forced to Cancel Their Charleston Wedding Due to Hurricane Florence—But Still Celebrated in the Best Way
Days before Hurricane Florence made landfall in the Carolinas, some had already felt its devastating effects—including couples who’d picked that weekend to tie the knot.
Among those pairs was Carter Loetz and Esther Walsh, who’d planned an idyllic Charleston garden wedding for September 15—exactly one year after they got engaged. Instead, they spent the days leading up to their big day informing guests that the wedding was postponed. “We were really bummed out by having to call our family and friends and tell them our wedding was cancelled,” said Loetz. But, at the same time, Loetz adds “that day was special to us and we wanted to make the most of it.”
So, hurricane or shine, the couple decided they still wanted to dress for the occasion. They called up their wedding planner, Jackie Fogartie, who arranged for the couple to do a mini-wedding photo shoot at the Ballantyne Hotel in their hometown of Charlotte, North Carolina. The sweet, rain-soaked celebration was captured by photographer Critsey Rowe.
“Once we got dressed up in our wedding attire and started taking photos in the wind and rain with Critsey, our moods changed and we were having fun together,” said Loetz.
Loetz and Walsh have rescheduled their wedding for the end of November at the same Charleston venue, though they told The New York Times they may be rethinking the outfits and décor, and adding an important menu item.
“We will definitely be serving hurricanes as the specialty cocktail,” said Loetz.
