Couple Bans Guests From Watching Soccer Championship at Their Wedding and the Internet Is Divided
Who’s in the wrong here? One wedding guest’s post to a forum has gone viral, with commenters deliberating whether the couple is in the wrong–or if their sports fan guests are the ones to blame instead.
“We’re attending a wedding the day of the championship leagues final,” the wedding guest wrote, noting that “now [that] Liverpool have gone to the final, [my husband] understandably wants to watch it. The majority of people attending are from Liverpool and the surrounding areas, my [husband] included.”
The big issue, however, is that the game is set to take place during the wedding itself, and the fanatic Liverpool followers among the guests are itching to peel off to watch the match. The bride and groom, who caught wind of the scheduling snafu, put out a notice to preempt any issues, “saying that they have chosen not to screen the champions league, and they do not want anyone to ask for it to be put on, to leave and watch it or to be watching it on any devices and to please respect that this day is about them.”
The wedding guest noted that she can see the situation from both sides—the bride and groom, who have undoubtedly spent months, if not more, planning for their big day, and the soccer fans, who are being told they have to choose between their friends’ wedding and an important championship game.
According to the guest, the bride and groom’s preemptive message wasn’t received well by her husband and other Liverpool fans.
“[My husband] and his brothers aren’t willing to miss such a massive game and are now trying to work out a plan to be able to watch it and then return to the wedding after,” she wrote. “… It’s just been left with they will be watching and that’s that, they think the bride and groom are being unreasonable to put a blanket ban on the whole thing and not just shove it on a [TV] in the bar. There’s over 200 guests invited to the wedding.”
The wedding guest ended her post with a simple question that’s sparked many responses online: “Who’s being unreasonable?”
“I think your [husband] and his brothers are totally unreasonable,” one commenter wrote. “It’s a football game. The bride and groom are obviously not wanting half their guests disappearing in the middle of their wedding, a day they will have been planning for months, to watch a football game. I actually feel for them that they are worried enough about it that they’ve had to send the message to preempt.”
Other commenters, however, sided with the Liverpool fans, and thought the bride and groom were being ridiculous.
“I can see their position. I hate football so wouldn’t want it creeping into my wedding,” one user wrote. “But on the other my brother is a massive Liverpool fan (home city) and would cancel his own wedding to watch this match. So on balance I think the bride and groom need to stick it one somewhere unless they want half their guests to bugger off to watch it.”
A fellow Liverpool fan weighed in that a compromise might still be possible, given the timing of the game. “Kick off is 8pm. Probably well after the formal dinner and speeches and into the dancing, mingling, drinking bit,” the commenter wrote. “Pretty much the perfect time to stick it on a TV in the bar or separate room. Yes, it’s the wedding day but it feels like a not unreasonable compromise they could make to keep a large number of guests happy. A bit of give and take.”
