County schools nix White Plains Anniston football game

Sep. 22—There will be no football in Anniston tonight.

Calhoun County School Superintendent Dr. Jose Reyes announced his decision just after noon Friday that "due to the events beyond our control this week," he had decided to "forgo the football contest between White Plains High School and Anniston High School."

That puts a complete stop to Anniston High School's homecoming celebration following the cancellation of Thursday night's parade and pep rally due to a shooting incident involving several students on Tuesday night.

One of those students was reported to have been hit in the back, but the injury was not serious. Police estimate 30 to 50 rounds were fired during the incident.

Police Chef Nick Bowles said an SRO officer had expressed concerns about the possibilities of other acts of violence during Thursday's planned celebrations.

Once those concerns were discussed with Anniston City School administrators, the district canceled those activities.

In the social media posting by Calhoun County Schools, it directly refers to the events "earlier in the week" for the decision by Reyes for the county school to forgo Friday night's game.

"We look forward to the opportunity to discuss holding the contest at a later date during the 2023 season," Reyes statement said.
