The CMA Fest, which just celebrated its 50th anniversary, is the largest and longest-running country music festival in the world. When it debuted in 1972, the celebration of all things country music—which was shut down for two years due to the Covid-19 pandemic—was simply dubbed Fan Fair. Five thousand people gathered inside the Municipal Auditorium in Nashville, Tennessee, to show their love for the genre.

Since then, the Country Music Academy (CMA) has turned the event into a behemoth festival that brings in tens of thousands of people each year to enjoy live music, games, interactive experiences and more. This year's four-day event attracted a crowd of 80,000.

"From a fan’s perspective, there’s nothing else like it in the world," country music star Luke Combs said on opening night of the 2023 festival. "You can go see every act in the genre, from the smallest act to the biggest act, and all you have to do is walk a few blocks. It’s so unique."

Perhaps the best part about the event is that it's hosted in the name of improving education for the children of Tennessee. A portion of ticket proceeds is donated to music education programs in the state's K-12 schools.

Hulu's star-studded documentary CMA Fest: 50 Years of Fan Fair will cover all of this and more. Here's what country music fans can expect.

What is the CMA Fest documentary about?

As the first-ever feature-length documentary made by the CMA, the film will trace the origin of the festival as it grew from the Municipal Auditorium to the Tennessee State Fairgrounds to downtown Nashville, where tens of thousands of fans now gather each year.

CMA Chief Executive Officer Sarah Trahern explains, "CMA Fest has taken several shapes throughout its storied history. As we step into our 50th year, our hope with this film is to underscore the one thing that has remained with the festival—its heart. We are thrilled to share the evolution and magic of this incredible event with the Hulu audience."

Is there a trailer for CMA Fest: 50 Years of Fan Fair?

Yes. Hulu released a trailer for the documentary in May 2023. Among other things, it features the story of how Garth Brooks made an unplanned appearance at the festival in 1996 and famously signed autographs for 23 hours straight. (Taylor Swift attempted a similar feat in 2010, when she signed autographs for 13 hours.)

"I moved here in a camper trailer, dreaming of being a part of CMA Fest," Lainey Wilson says, closing out the video. "And, dang it, I am a part of it now."
