Over 40-plus years of friendship, country queens Dolly Parton and Reba McEntire have taken their fair share of photos together. So it was only fitting that, in honor of McEntire’s 66th birthday, Parton pulled a gem from the vault to share with the world.

The March 28 Instagram post features a younger Parton and McEntire posing with wide smiles. It’s clearly a photo of a printed picture, made evident by a light-reflecting glare and McEntire’s own handwriting scrawled across the bottom right corner. “A true musician. A true friend. Happy birthday, @reba ❤️,” Parton captioned the post. In silver ink, McEntire’s vintage note read: “Dolly! You’ll always be my hero! Love ya, Reba.”

It’s unclear exactly when and where the stars snapped the pic, but that doesn’t make it any less iconic. Fans certainly didn’t think so. “Legendary!!” one person commented. “Two of my favorites! Happy Birthday, Reba!” another added. “These two amazing ladies have blessed me with their music!” someone else wrote. Within 24 hours of posting, the vignette garnered nearly 130,000 likes and over 1,000 comments.

Back in January, McEntire extended a similar message to Parton for her 75th birthday under a few more classic throwbacks, including one of them on stage together. “Happy birthday Dolly Parton, I love you more than my rhinestones! 💖 We sure have shared a lot of memories over the years and I’m looking forward to many more ahead of us,” the “Fancy” singer wrote. “I can’t imagine a world without Dolly.”

Unfortunately due to the pandemic, the pair haven’t spent much time together lately. But the “Jolene” singer did appear as a guest on McEntire’s podcast, Living and Learning with Reba McEntire in September 2020, where she talked about forging her own path. And even though she and McEntire are close friends, the Reba star had a total fan-girl moment over Parton’s album, My Blue Ridge Mountain Boy.

“I wore it out. Your songwriting, it is just so heartfelt, and it pierced my heart on every song. Those songs, I can still remember the words to ‘em when I can’t remember the words to a song I have out as a single nowadays,” McEntire said. Parton was flattered.

And that’s what friends are for.
