Problem: Insect bites are annoying, itchy, and sometimes painful.

Solution: The bite away is a nifty handheld gadget that immediately eases the sting and itchiness from bug bites.

As much as I love the warmer months, I hate the mosquitoes that come with them.

I’m based in Columbus, Ohio, which has been experiencing a lot of rainfall as of late — which, of course, means more bugs. And this year, I have a feeling that the skeeters are going to be extra bad since I’ve already been bitten a handful of times.

There isn’t any standing water in my yard, I don’t have any bird baths, my gutters are clear, and I keep my empty flower pots turned upside-down (thank you very much!). Having said that, it’s fair to venture a guess that I’m just one of those lucky people who mosquitoes are drawn to.

Fun fact, only 6% of the 3,500 species out there feast on humans, so yeah, I feel really special to be among the chosen.

To help ease the urge to itch and the stinging pain from occasional bug bites, I've found solace in the bite away. It's a tiny device about the size of a pregnancy test that uses heat to stop the histamine reaction. It seems like such a gimmicky, almost infomercial-like product — but, trust me, it truly works.

The battery-operated bite away is super simple to use. All you have to do is place the end of the device on top of your bite, push a button, a yellow light will turn on, and when the light goes dark, that's it — you're all done!

I'm not going to lie — the bite away does hurt a little bit when you're using it, but given how irritating and painful bug bites can be, the temporary discomfort is worth putting up with. The device uses hot metal to heat the skin. It warms up to 124 degrees Fahrenheit and basically sears the location of your bite, which I know sounds unnerving. For context, a fresh cup of coffee is roughly 180 degrees according to the National Coffee Association.

However, the heat lasts either 3 or 5 seconds (depending on which button you push) so the pain comes and goes quickly. The shorter cycle is for milder bites, and the longer one is for those bigger bites that itch for days. Supposedly, the bite away can even stop the pain from bee stings — fortunately for me, I haven't had to test it on a bee sting just yet.

I haven't experienced any scars or long-lasting marks from using the bite away — and I've owned mine for over a year now. The nifty device is also FDA-cleared, and dermatologist-tested, so I've always felt safe using it. Although the FDA says it can be used by children ages 2 and up, I personally wouldn't use it on a child.

Still not convinced? Itching, pain, and swelling caused by bites and stings from wasps, mosquitoes, and bees significantly decreased after using bite away, according to a study* with about 150 participants that was conducted by the National Center for Biotechnology Information.

Before the bite away, I would scratch my bug bites to the point that my skin would later scar. Now, thanks to the bite away, I never even feel the need to itch. It's a small product that's made a big impact on my life during the summer months, and I truly can't recommend it enough.

Wrap-Up: The bite away instantly eases the swelling, pain, and itchiness of pesky insect bites and will turn your huge bug bite welts into tiny mounds in just days. Although it feels slightly painful while using it, the brief pain is well worth the inconvenience of any bug bite I've ever experienced.

*It's quickly worth mentioning that the referenced study above was funded by bite away's parent company and it did not have a control group of people with bites who did not use the device.
