Sylvester Stallone has enjoyed quite the career resurgence in the last few years, returning to play two of his most iconic characters; boxer Rocky Balboa in the Creed series and John Rambo in the upcoming Rambo V: Last Blood. And according to a recent Instagram post, the Hollywood legend is thinking about heading back to another action franchise: The Expendables.

Stallone shared an old promotional image of himself in character as series lead Barney Ross on July 4, saying: "All of those July 4th Fireworks got my mind going! I am starting to cook up The next adventure!"

The Expendables came out in 2010 and can be at least partially credited with reminding the world that Stallone is action movie gold. Stallone wrote the film and starred alongside a who's who of action stars, including Jason Statham, Terry Crews, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren and Steve Austin, as the Expendables, a group of elite mercenaries. A second movie followed in 2012, and a third in 2014, both of which were also written by Stallone.

The fourth Expendables movie has been languishing in development hell ever since, with Pierce Brosnan and Jack Nicholson both rumored to be involved. In 2017, Stallone officially left the franchise, citing creative differences with producer Ari Lerner. "We’ve got disagreements with Sly, but we’ve had them for over a year and a half," Lerner told Deadline at the time. "Right now, each one has an opinion. We agreed on 95% of things, but there are certain things in production we don’t agree on. I don’t think it’s over, but write whatever you want. In my opinion, it’s not dead."

And it turns out, he may have been right. It sure does sound like Stallone is ready to don that beret again and get back to what he does best: kicking ass.
