Could Princess Charlotte Be Getting a New Royal Title?

Stop the royal presses: It appears that Princess Charlotte may be inheriting a new royal title once belonging to her great-grandmother, Queen Elizabeth.
According to a new report from The Mail on Sunday, it’s speculated that King Charles may not give the Duke of Edinburgh title to his brother, Prince Edward, as first thought. In fact, the monarch may bestow the royal title upon his granddaughter, Charlotte, and she could soon become the Duchess of Edinburgh.

The immense honor would be a fitting tribute to the late queen, who held the title before she took over the throne in 1952. Throughout Elizabeth’s reign, her husband Prince Philip held the title of the Duke of Edinburgh.
“Discussions are underway, but the favored outcome for the King is that this title ought to go to Princess Charlotte,” a source revealed to The Mail on Sunday. “It would be a fitting way to remember the Queen—who, of course, had the title Duchess of Edinburgh—and a way for His Majesty to honor the line of succession.”

As the second child and only daughter of Prince William and Kate Middleton, Charlotte is the third in the line of succession with her older brother, Prince George, ahead of her and her youngest brother, Prince Louis, following right behind.
The source later told The Mail on Sunday why the young royal would be the perfect candidate for the honorary title. “Charlotte's position is historically significant because she is the first female member of the royal family whose place in the line of succession will not be surpassed by her younger brother.”
They added, “So it is constitutionally significant that Charlotte should be given such a corresponding title, because it is not beyond the realms of possibility that she will accede the throne if, for example, Prince George does not have children.”
