Could Matthew Williams' Givenchy Be the Next Big Red Carpet Brand?

The Fall 2023 collection features a strong assortment of eveningwear.

Givenchy may be known for a casually chic, aristocratic style, but it's Fall 2023 show included a plethora of eveningwear that could signal a renewed focus on the red-carpet biz.

On Thursday in Paris, the French house presented a collection that, like many others this season, leans into functionality and workwear. The show opened with an upbeat, electronic mix of voiceovers soundtracking a range of monochrome garments with strong tailoring and classic forms including structured, black wool overcoats with cinched waists and boxy trench coats with disciplined silhouettes.

But it wasn't all black. As the music slowed to a languid speed, the colors paradoxically became more exciting and vibrant. Models donned various bright Sesame Street colors (another recurring theme this season): a beautiful green knit turtleneck dress featuring floral patterns reminiscent of toile wallpaper, another see-through red tulle dress with a flowing train and a bright-yellow long-sleeve gown with textured ruching at the hips. Another standout: a glittering, floral sequined cowl-neck dress with beaded tassels at the hem. Overall, Williams presented a compelling collection of edgy-yet-elegant red-carpet-worthy dresses that we could see a few celebrities sporting on the red carpet soon.

Amid the more formal looks, Williams incorporated a few quirky touches as well. Most notably, a sliced sequin dress featuring prints of fish imagery. A similar fish pattern is imprinted on a white midi dress — just in time for Pisces season.
