On April 10, 2019, history was made when the first actual photograph of a supermassive black hole was captured for all to see. Behold, a collapsed star in the center of the Virgo A (Messier 87) galaxy—housed inside the Virgo constellation—with a gravitational force so fierce that no light can slip between the particles of matter it pulls in. It's an exciting discovery for astronomy, but believe it or not, black hole astrology is also a thing. It’s been in development since (Pisces) Albert Einstein’s General Theory of Relativity predicted these phenomena in 1916. Figuring out what a black hole means astrologically is largely an interpretive dance. What are the qualities of a black hole? Astrologers operate on the theory of “as above, so below,” so how do we see these resonating down here on planet Earth?

Black holes are unseen forces that pull us into their fields. Like it or not, we are getting sucked in, no matter how “enlightened” we consider ourselves to be. These inescapable forces yank us into the shadows, revealing our addictions, compulsions and reptilian brain urges. In many ways, black holes are the astrological Darth Vaders of our subconscious minds. As collapsed stars, they may represent the things that fall apart in our lives. Why do we keep on repeating the same destructive patterns? What is the compulsion that drives us to sabotage the very things we work so hard to build?

As every Star Wars geek knows, Darth Vader was once Anakin Skywalker, a super Jedi who knew how to use “the force” for good. Similarly, black holes can teach us how to work with our shadows in an empowering way. Like the hero’s journey of Joseph Campbell’s monomyth, you have to plunge into a dark night of the soul before being resurrected as an enlightened being.

Given this, black holes might just be the portals to our true power. Without darkness there can’t be light—and vice versa. By naming and claiming those compulsive urges, we gain compassion for ourselves and others who are going through similar struggles. If we don’t surrender to our total humanity, these forces will dog us. Instead, we can accept that they exist, then make smarter choices from there.

As it turns out, Virgo A is just one of many black holes that are considered by astrologers like Alex Miller, who authored The Black Hole Book, one of the most comprehensive writings to date on this subject. Our own Milky Way galaxy has a supermassive black hole at its center, called Sagittarius A, which astrologers consider a powerful portal between life, death and the afterlife.

Unlike a planet, which is in constant orbit through the zodiac wheel, a black hole is considered a “galactic point,” which stays pretty fixed in one place for years. While Virgo A is indeed housed in the Virgo constellation, it currently corresponds with an early degree of Libra in the Western zodiac. Given that, we’ve crafted some interpretations about how Virgo A may impact each of the zodiac signs. Because, hey, now that you’ve seen it, you can’t deny its existence.
