Costco's Rotisserie Chicken Is Changing

Not everyone is happy.

If you're a Costco fan, chances are you're very familiar with the Kirkland Signature Rotisserie Chicken. It's a staple at the warehouse, and for good reason.

Not only are the chickens meaty, weighing around 3 pounds per bird, but they are an inexpensive way to get dinner on the table fast (they average around $5 depending on location).

However, a significant change is coming to these beloved birds, and it's all about the packaging.

Soon, we will no longer see the Kirkland Signature Rotisserie Chicken in plastic take-home containers. Instead, it will be in a bag.

The change-up was posted in a recent Reddit thread, with a photo of the soon-to-come packaging. The thread said that using bags will result in 75 percent less plastic and 1,000 trucks removed.

Many were on board with the change being more environmentally friendly but were concerned about the new packaging being less convenient: "Great for the environment but man it was nice being able to pick the chicken in the container and use the lid as the discard for bones."

Someone else added, "The plastic bag is just a mess waiting to happen…This is not a positive change."

Another big concern for many was that this new bag would make it harder to see just what chicken is inside: "Ahh its great that they can save plastic but now i cant use my method to see if its the biggest chicken."

While the bag may be new in the U.S., the switch happened in Canada a while ago. According to another Reddit thread, shoppers in Ottawa, Canada saw the packaging swap last year.

Interestingly enough, the change didn't upset these customers too much. Many commented that they didn't care what packaging the chicken came in "as long as it gets my chicken home safely." At the same time, another noted that "those current containers are not recyclable anyway."
