Costco customers in certain regions of the U.S. who recently bought ham from the warehouse club should be aware of a food recall issued at the end of September.

The company’s website links to a letter written to Costco members that was ostensibly sent out to the club members whose accounts indicate they purchased “item #46655 Kirkland Signature Master Carve Half Ham, Natural Juices Boneless Smoked Half Ham between September 26, 2023 and September 29, 2023.”

The letter also indicates Costco sold the hams only in “Northern California/Bay Area and Western Nevada.”

Details on the Costco Recalled Ham

If you believe you’ve purchased one of the recalled hams, here are the full details you need to know to positively identify the affected hams.

  • Sunnyvalley Smoked Meats Inc. is recalling a single code date due to potential Listeria contamination.

  • Recalled hams sold as Kirkland Signature Master Carve Half Ham can be identified by the Use / Freeze by Jan 20 24 and the Lot # 264 - 4 sticker.

  • No other date codes are affected by the issue or the recall.

Costco customers are not to eat any remaining product that falls under the recall. Instead, they should return the item to their local Costco for a full refund.

Anyone with issues or concerns can call Sunnyvalley Smoked Meats Inc., at 209-647-3504 Monday through Friday between the hours of 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. PT.

What Are the Symptoms of Listeria Illness?

The CDC indicates that the symptoms of Listeria illness, what most of us would call food poisoning, usually occur within 24 hours after eating contaminated food. The symptoms can last one to three days and include diarrhea and vomiting. These symptoms are usually mild, requiring no antibiotics. However, some people may experience a more invasive illness that may need to be treated with antibiotics.

Those who are pregnant, over 65, or with a compromised immune system are at greater risk of developing an invasive illness due to Listeria. Signs of severe/invasive Listeria illness or other food poisoning include bloody diarrhea or any diarrhea that lasts more than three days, a fever over 102°F, not being able to keep any liquids down, and dehydration. Seek medical attention for these symptoms.
