Costco just announced a recall on Culinary Treasures Organic Chicken Bone Broth. This is due to potential non-pathogenic microbial contamination.

According to the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA), non-pathogenic microorganisms are unlikely to cause disease or injury to consumers. However, this type of contamination may result in product bloating, shortened shelf-life and potential for early spoilage, which can put people at risk of foodborne illness or food poisoning.

The recalled 32-ounce cartons of chicken bone broth are labeled with UPC 67200055858 and Lot Code 98E08242. Consumers are likely to have purchased the affected product between September 8, 2023 and September 22, 2023, and the packages list a "Best By Date" of 02/23/2024.

While there have not yet been any reported illnesses related to this recall, Costco is urging customers to check their pantries and discard the item or return the affected products to the nearest store location for a full refund.

Though foodborne illness is not usually life-threatening, it can lead to symptoms like abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, fever and muscle aches. Food poisoning can be especially dangerous for those who are age 5 or younger, immunocompromised or currently pregnant. In more severe cases, those who are pregnant may experience complications, including pregnancy loss or premature birth. It can also cause severe illness or death in infected newborns.

Call your health care provider immediately if you are experiencing any of the above symptoms after consuming any affected products. Microbes can easily spread to other food and surfaces and can survive at refrigerated temperatures, so after disposing of any impacted foods, carefully follow the FDA's safe handling and cleaning procedures.
