Costco Has a Frozen Starbucks Copycat Fans Call ‘Sooo Good’

And it's a fraction of the price.

It’s January, and let’s face it—our budgets could use a break. Over the past couple of months, we gifted, wined, dined, traveled, and bought expensive cheeses for our holiday cheese boards. Now, most of us are looking to tighten our belts a bit, and that often means preparing our meals at home rather than dining out or grabbing them on the go.

If you fall into the “most of us” category, you’re in the right place. Allrecipes is first and foremost a recipe site where you can find thousands of meals to make, including those for the comfort foods you crave during the cold weather. But not every meal made at home has to be made from scratch. Buying frozen meals can also help with the tightening of the belt, and Costco has a copycat of a favorite Starbucks menu item that’s among the yummiest of frozen meals.

The coffee chain offers a warm Ham & Swiss Croissant—with hickory-smoked ham and melted Swiss cheese—as one of its bakery items. According to my Starbucks app, the croissant is $4.65.

Costco's La Boulangerie Smoked Ham and Swiss Croissants

Here's where Costco steps in with a winning copycat. The La Boulangerie Smoked Ham and Swiss Cheese Croissants in the warehouse store's frozen foods section cost $12.99 for eight, coming in at just $1.62 a croissant. That’s over 65% less! The two croissant sandwiches are comparable in size, also. Starbucks’ bakery item is 92 grams. Costco’s frozen version is 90 grams.

When Instagram’s Costcobuys posted a video of a box of the La Boulangerie croissants, there was almost a unanimous opinion that the item—that’s “Just like Starbucks!”—is “sooo good!!” especially when served right from the oven or air fryer.

One picky eater had high praise, saying, ”I LOVE them, im a very picky eater like i can't stand eating any meat but chicken most of the time.”

“WANT AND NEED!!!!” exclaimed a commenter, and another simply said, “I’m moving further away from Starbucks lol,” presumably meaning with options like this, there’s no reason to have to hit up the drive-thru.

This croissant is not the only hot Starbucks copycat item Costco started carrying recently. Its Kirkland brand recently dropped a breakfast sandwich—made with a warm spiral butter croissant bun, applewood smoked bacon, egg, and cheese—that’s so close to one of Starbucks’ breakfast treats that it’s hard to think it wasn’t created to directly compete with the coffee chain.

How to Make Ham and Cheese Croissants at Home

If you’re now craving a croissant with ham and cheese, and you don’t have a Costco membership, we have a recipe for Make-Ahead Egg Sandwiches that you freeze and reheat that recreate all the elements of the Costco version.

The recipe makes six sandwiches that contain cooked egg, smoked ham, and Colby-Jack cheese, but you can substitute Swiss, or any other cheese, that you’d like.  Assemble the sandwiches, freeze them in individual portions, and pull just as many as you need out of the freezer. Allrecipes member alisrakin says, “These are so good! And I love having these ready to go for a quick snack for my son and of course breakfast on the go.”
