Costco Is Facing Severe Backlash After Testing A New Membership Card Policy

Costco is no stranger to pushback when it comes to its membership policies, but the company's latest potential change has some customers severely on edge. Earlier this month, a post on Reddit that included a photo of a man scanning his membership card to gain entry into Costco, quickly went viral.

The reactions to the policy were immediate, and nearly two weeks after the post was uploaded, people still have a lot to say about the possibility of mandatory card scans at Costco entrances.

"Absolutely asinine! You can’t purchase anything at Costco without your card. They scan it at purchase so there’s no need to even show the damn card at entry," one person tweeted in response to an article about the policy.

Others have stated that scanning your membership at entry is "stupid" and a "waste of time."

"If I have to scan my card at checkout, why do I have to scan it at entrance?! Waste of time and created lines outside the store. People were standing in lines in the cold wile others trying to find their cards and holding the line to enter the store. Stupid idea," read one comment on X (formerly Twitter).

In another Reddit thread, one user detailed their experience with the membership card scanners. They explained that aside from some minor snags, the process was fairly seamless.

"The scanners worked well and didn't add any time to getting inside. I did give my husband a hard time for leaving me behind at the entrance," they revealed.

One customer is actually pleased with the new development, writing, "Neat. Now make people leave their dogs outside, too."

Additionally, Costco has since provided a statement confirming that they are in fact testing the policy.

"This test is to match members to their cards at the door prior to shopping for an improved member experience," Costco said in a statement to USA Today.
