You’ll want to check your fridge or freezer because the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) just released a public health alert for Costco’s Kirkland Signature Chicken Tortilla Soup, saying it’s unsafe for some people to eat. The alert was issued because the ready-to-eat soup’s label falsely claims the product is gluten-free when it, in fact, contains gluten.

Costco’s chicken tortilla soup isn’t being recalled because it is no longer available for purchase, but an alert was issued because you might still have the mislabeled soup in your fridge or freezer.

The soup was sold at Costco stores in Alaska, California, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, and Washington. You’ll know you have the impacted soup if the label has a use-by date of November 11, 2023, a lot code of 1394066, and an establishment number of P-18468 inside the USDA mark of inspection.

You can also view photos of the Chicken Tortilla Soup’s label on the USDA’s site.

The soup is not safe to eat for those with gluten allergies or sensitivities, as FSIS lab testing discovered that the soup does contain gluten. If you have the soup, and a gluten allergy, you should not consume the soup—instead, throw it away or return it to your Costco store. However, if you do not have a gluten allergy or sensitivity, you may still eat the soup—as the alert was only issued because of a mislabeling problem, and there isn’t anything inherently unsafe about the soup itself.

There haven’t been any reports of adverse reactions caused by eating this soup, but if you have any questions about allergic reactions or other illnesses, you should contact your healthcare provider.

If you have any questions about the public health alert, you can contact the customer relationship manager for Kettle Cuisine, Jacqui Valerio, at 619-409-1100 or jvalerio@kettlecuisine.com.
