Costco members who picked up some pre-cut organic butternut squash recently may want to check the package before they whip up a batch of soup. The retailer has announced a recall of some squash due to possible E. coli contamination.

The recall impacts butternut squash sold at Costco in two-pound plastic clamshells. Luckily, the recall appears to be isolated to a small batch of produce sold with one particular date on the packaging in a handful of stores in the mid-Atlantic area.

As Good Morning America notes, Costco recently shared a letter sent by the food manufacturer who packaged the butternut squash (Safeway Fresh Foods of Vineland, New Jersey) to members who may have purchased the squash in question. The note explains that the “recall is being initiated due to the discovery of E-Coli O45 in a single sample during routine testing by our Lab.” According to the company, “only product with the 09/19/2023 date code” sold “between 9/7/2023 and 9/15/2023” is affected by this recall. The note indicates that the squash was sold at Costco locations in D.C., Maryland, and Pennsylvania, as well as Costco stores in Charlottesville, Leesburg, Fairfax, Sterling, and Pentagon City, Virginia.

To check your squash, look for the sticker on the front of the clamshell. Under the words “Product of USA” look for a date. If it says 09/19/2023, do not eat the squash, but return it to Costco for a full refund. If it has any other date, you’re good to start making your butternut squash bread pudding, gratin, cake, mac and cheese, or lasagna.
