This New Costco Bakery Item Is a Hit With Shoppers, Who Call it a 'Moist Piece of Heaven'

Costco Bakery has the Internet whipped into a frenzy once again. Last week, there was a pretty epic food fight over whether the new Strawberries & Cream Bar Cake was worth the $17.99 price tag—some were all for it, while others were pretty sour on the whole thing. The Costco Lemon Meringue Cheesecake was also divisive, though our reviewer was a fan. However, the Internet is all on the same team about the newly released Costco Sour Cream Butter Pound Cake.

If you live in the Northeast like me, "sour cream" and "pound cake" may sound a little surprising. Pound cakes get their name because originally they were made with one pound each of flour, butter, sugar and eggs, but down South, they double up on the dairy with the addition of sour cream.

Southern-style sour cream pound cake is rich and tender, with a little extra tang from the sour cream. And sour cream adds moisture without thinning the batter like milk or buttermilk can, which means you're guaranteed to have a thick, tender, buttery (read: delicious) cake.

It seems like plenty of people know about the power of sour cream in pound cakes because the $7.99 cakes are flying off the Costco shelves and shoppers are taking to social media to rave about the treat. Here's what they had to say—and why you might want to follow suit.

What Are Shoppers Saying About Costco's Sour Cream Butter Pound Cake?

In the year 2023, it's rare to find something the majority of the Internet agrees on. Costco's Sour Cream Butter Pound Cake is that unicorn.

Earlier this month, Costco posted about the newest buttery addition to its bakery with a pretty subtle caption.

"The Sour Cream Butter Pound Cake is a new Costco treat. Top it with your favorite fruit! Baked fresh in the Costco Bakery," read the Facebook caption underneath a snap of two slices of tender pound cake. Each has a thin layer of sour cream-vanilla icing—like a delicious glazed donut with a creative kick.

"I just had it today with my cup of coffee. I thought it was going to be just plain, but no — it was so buttery," raved one Facebook commenter.

Instagram account @costcobuys posted about the cake, too.

"It’s actually REALLY good," the caption reads.

"Yummy! Can’t stop eating it," one commenter gushed.

"Just picked this up today. Everyone loves it," wrote another.

"We demolished that bad boy. It was so good," commented someone who will likely be headed back to the Costco bakery very soon.

Someone else called it a "moist piece of heaven."

So, it's getting rave reviews, although in the interest of fairness, we did run across one not-glowing comment.

"Was so excited for this, but mine was really dry," someone wrote on the @costcobuys post.

Maybe it was a rare miss? Because a pair of mama-daughter taste-testing tag-team on TikTok did not have that experience. The duo, Meg and Maddie (aka @floridamomof3), posted a video of them trying the cake. Their verdict? It was moist. Really moist. And delicious.

5 Ways to Dress Up Costco's Sour Cream Butter Pound Cake

So we've established that Costco's Sour Cream Butter Pound Cake is great on its own, but another reason the Internet is enamored with the dessert is that it's a great summer dessert shortcut.

The Costco Facebook post suggested fresh fruit, which has been a common topper for shoppers. On Costco's Facebook page, a fan commented with a suggestion to try it with strawberries and whipped cream, which got a swift reply, "That's exactly how I had it!"

That seems to be a pattern because an Instagram commenter raved, "OMG, it is delicious. Cut up some strawberries and whip cream."

But strawberries are just the beginning. Here are 5 other ways to dress up your Costco pound cake.

  • Grill it. Cut thick slices and stick them on a hot grill. In just a couple of minutes, you'll have warm, tender cake with delicious caramelized stripes from the grill. Top with grilled peaches or plums.

  • Sandwich it. Spread softened ice cream on one slice of cake, top with another slice, and free until firm. Slice crosswise into strips for cute little ice cream sandwiches for a party.

  • Turn it into a trifle. Trifles are often saved for the holidays, but the layered desserts are fun to serve any time of year. Cut the pound cake into cubes, then layer with fresh fruit (let it sit with some sugar so it gets nice and juicy) and whipped cream. You can make it in the morning and serve it in the afternoon, which makes it a great make-ahead dessert.

  • French toast-ify it. Got leftover pound cake? Dip slices in a mixture of eggs, milk, and cinnamon and cook in a buttered skillet as you would French toast.

  • Dunk it in chocolate. When in doubt, add chocolate. Cubes or sticks of pound cake are ideal dippers for chocolate fondue.
