Update: Coroner identifies teen killed in Lexington shooting that left two others injured

A 16-year-old boy died and two other teens were injured after a shooting along a bike path in Lexington Friday night.

Michael Ray Stinnett was pronounced dead as a result of a gunshot wound at 8 p.m. Friday on the 1600 block of Summerhill Drive, the Fayette County coroner’s office said in a news release Saturday. The case is being investigated as a homicide.

Lexington police said two other people, both 19-year-old males, were taken to a local hospital. One was in critical condition, police said in a news release late Friday, while the other had injuries that were not life-threatening.

The scene of the shooting was along a bike path near the corner of Summerhill and Woodspring drives, which is just off Armstrong Mill Road near Seton Catholic School.

Lexington police Lt. Jeremiah Davis said police were called to the 1600 block of Summerhill at 7:13 p.m. Friday regarding a report of shots fired and found the shooting victims.

He did not provide any information about a possible suspect.

A bystander said he was in the area at the time and saw people who had been shot.

Matt Coomer said he had stopped by his parents’ house when he saw someone going into the backyard saying “somebody’s just been shot.”

One of the three victims “was asking for help,” Coomer said. He said a neighbor who is a retired first responder helped the person apply pressure to his wound.

Marti Heaton, who lives nearby, said kids frequently use the path to go to and from the neighborhood store. She also said she regularly takes walks on the path.

“I’ve never had a problem,” she said. “I was so shocked that somebody got shot right here. ... It’s too bad because this area is full of kids.”
