The Coronavirus Is Making People Post About Their Newfound Appreciation for Teachers

The news is tough these days and changing rapidly, but one upside of this weird time we’re living through is people’s discovering a newfound appreciation for teachers during the coronavirus pandemic.

Across much of the country, schools have closed, turning parents into de facto homeschool teachers. They are relearning math skills from their past, attempting to master science lessons long forgotten, and having their patience tested regularly. My mom was a teacher, and I’ve long held that it’s one of the hardest jobs in the world, but it’s great to see a collective outpouring of love for our nation’s teachers during a difficult time in our country.

People are posting about their experiences with homeschooling on social media with heartwarming and hilarious results. “Been homeschooling a 6-year old and 8-year old for one hour and 11 minutes,” Shonda Rhimes tweeted. “Teachers deserve to make a billion dollars a year. Or a week.”

Many others have echoed her sentiment about how much we should be paying our teachers.

“A bunch of the ‘Teachers Don’t Deserve $100K A Year’ crowd who gotta stay home with their kids now and homeschool them are figuring out that teaching one or two kids is hard enough let alone 28 of them lol,” author Shea Serrano wrote.

Turns out, scheduling kids and lessons for an entire day is not so easy. “Thank you for the online preschool learning resources, but I am going to let Disney Plus take it from here,” one mom tweeted.

We are grateful for all the comedic posts about how this whole “school at home without real teachers” thing is going.

As a country, we will find many lasting lessons to take away from the coronavirus pandemic when we come out the other side. Let’s hope that a greater appreciation for teachers is one of them. They deserve all the praise—and all the raises.
