#CopyThat: Emily Ratajkowski's Ombré Eye

The beauty at the 2016 Emmys was subdued, to say the least. But Emily Ratajkowski‘s ombré eye gets our award for “Most Dramatic Makeup.” The 25-year-old’s teal blue eyeshadow was bold and beautiful, adding just the right amount of edge to her elegant navy gown and slicked-back hairdo.

Wowed by Ratajkowski’s Emmys eye shadow, Yahoo Beauty tasked makeup artist Katie Jane Hughes with recreating the model/actress’s stunning red carpet look. Learn how to do an ombré eye that works with your eye color in the tutorial above, and get the full breakdown in the steps below.

Step-by-step instructions

1. Use a black eye pencil like Yves Saint Laurent’s Dessin du Regard Crayon in Velvet Black to outline the waterline. Then blend the liner with a small shadow brush.

2. Apply Jouer Crème Eyeshadow Crayon in Marble to the upper and lower lids, creating a “C” shape around lashes.

3. Use a silver cream shadow (Hughes used Clé de Peau Beauté Cream Eye Color Solo in 306 Shiny Steel Gray) in the inner corners of the eye, for a luminous finish.

4. Take a black powder shadow from the Maybelline Graffiti Nudes Palette, and layer on top of the crème shadow to intensify pigment.

5. Add teal blue eyeshadow (we recommend Gucci Beauty Magnetic Shadow Mono in Iconic Ottanio), starting at the inner corners of the eye and blending towards the center. This technique creates an ombré, gradient effect.

6. Dab a metallic shadow such as Illamasqua Liquid Metal Cream in Surge to the inner corners. This will really make lighter eye colors pop!

7. Coat upper and lower lashes in Charlotte Tilbury Full Fat Lashes mascara.

8. Use Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector Poured Crème in Champagne Pop to highlight the cheeks and cupid’s bow. Pro tip: Avoid area between lashes and cheekbone, as it will accentuate fine lines and wrinkles.

9. Add warmth to complexion with MAC Cream Colour Base in Bamboo. Press the same product onto your lips for a peachy-nude pout, and add Urban Decay Vice Lipstick in Backtalk on top.

10. Complete look by using a fan brush to sweep on Benefit Cosmetics Hoola Matte Bronzer to the hairline, ears, and jawline.
