Is Labor Day a good time to buy a new mattress?

According to Lexie Sachs, executive director of the GH Institute Textiles Lab, holiday weekends like Labor Day are the best times to save on mattresses. "While mattress companies offer discounts and sales throughout the year, a holiday weekend is when you'll see the most consistent and competitive offers across brands."

What to consider when buying a mattress on Labor Day weekend

Our experts at the GH Institute Textiles Lab thoroughly research the top mattress brands, materials and features. So, to help you get started, Seymour also lent her expert insight for Labor Day mattress shopping:

• Research mattress types: "First and foremost, know what type of mattress you are most interested in purchasing," she says. "Memory foam and innerspring mattresses are the most common, but latex, hybrid and adjustable beds are increasing in popularity."

• Know your preferences: Sleeping position and body type can help inform the best mattress firmness for you. Check out our mattress buying guide to learn more about how to factor in both your sleep position and weight to find the best firmness level for your needs.

• Review trial periods, return policies and warranties: To avoid being stuck with a new mattress you don’t love, Seymour recommends researching different brands' return policies. Instead of focusing on warranties, which can be misleading, she suggests opting for a mattress with an any-reason return policy for at least 100 nights, giving you sufficient time to test the mattress. Be wary of any hidden return fees.

• Confirm mattress delivery options: If you want your new mattress delivered directly to your room and set up for you, look for white glove delivery. Some brands offer this service for free and others at an additional cost, so be sure to budget for any extra expense. Typically, mattress-in-a-box brands ship via a regular delivery service for DIY set-up. According to Seymour, testers liked this option as they didn’t have to wait around for a scheduled delivery, but make sure you have someone who can help you carry the mattress to your bedroom upon delivery.
