What’s Cool At School? – National recognition for a student artist from Faith Lutheran High School

LAS VEGAS ( KLAS ) – Your refrigerator may be home to cherished art work by young people you know.

A painting by a Las Vegas student has moved far beyond the family kitchen – all because she dared to for look inside herself.

Twelfth-grader Sophia Orr:

“My work is called Introspection. It’s basically about fear of the dark and being scared of what’s in the dark. It could even go as far as being scared of being left alone in the dark, left alone with your own thoughts.”

Her teacher, Megan Mettmann, says Sophia had never worked with oil painting before:

“It was mostly just showing her the steps. She already had the idea. I needed to give her the skills for the process and she really took it from there and she took off with it. Her work is investigating fears and paranoia. She’s painting pieces that are pretty daring and talk about mental health issues that a lot of us are afraid to discuss verbally.”

After being on display at Faith Lutheran earlier this year, Sophia’s art is now part of the National Art Honor Society’s virtual gallery along with students from all over the country.

Sophia plans on continuing her studies in graphic design to one day become an art director.

Sounds like after looking inward she’s laser focused on her outlook.
