Broadcaster and documentarian Louis Theroux's next feature has been unveiled. Tell Them You Love Me is a 100-minute documentary exploring the controversial affair between a married female professor and a non-verbal man with cerebral palsy.

It led to a criminal trial in 2015, which was covered extensively in the press. Theroux’s feature-length documentary aims to dig into the heart of the divisive issue, which challenges perceptions of disability.

Anna Stubblefield, the woman at the centre of the controversy, maintains her innocence, but prosecutors argued the man, Derrick Johnson, was unable to give consent.

Tell Them You Love Me comes from Theroux’s television production company, Mindhouse Productions, which has also seen success with other thought-provoking pieces such as Shooting Joe Exotic, Gods of Tennis, and Lockerbie.

Theroux tells Sky: “When I started Mindhouse four years ago, this was exactly the kind of morally complex film I’d hoped we might be involved in making. It deals with some of the most sensitive and difficult themes in the culture but does so in a way that is intelligent and forensic and never sensationalist.”

Tell Them You Love Me releases on Sky Documentaries and NOW in November 2023.
