Consumer Reports Urges Fisher-Price to Issue Recall After Another Infant Death Is Linked to Their Infant Rockers

Consumer Reports wrote a letter to the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) today to express their “serious safety concerns” with Fisher-Price’s infant-to-toddler rockers. They then urged the commission to push for a recall “as quickly as possible.”

When reviewing SaferProducts.gov — a site where consumers can research safety information about products and submit their own problems and concerns — Consumer Reports found a fatality linked to the rockers. In Nov. 2023, an infant died after she was reportedly placed in a rocker while asleep and later found “on her stomach, face to the side.”

This tragic incident and the subsequent letter comes nearly two years after Fisher-Price and the CPSC issued a warning in June 2022 advising caregivers to never use the Infant-to-Toddler Rocker nor the Newborn-to-Toddler Rocker for sleep. The reminder came after at least 13 infant deaths were linked to the products between 2009 and 2021.

“It is heartbreaking to learn that a Fisher-Price infant rocker is tied to yet another infant death,” Orienne Shin, policy counsel for Consumer Reports said in a statement. “…Mattel and Fisher-Price have utterly failed to protect the babies and families who rely on their products, and the consequences are devastating. Fisher-Price must recall these rockers to get as many of them as possible out of people’s homes.”

In 2019, Fisher-Price issued a recall of their Rock ‘n Play Sleeper after it was linked to 30 infant fatalities. In Jan. 2023, the CPSC reissued the recall announcement, sharing that approximately 70 additional fatalities were reported since the recall — eight of which happened after the original announcement.

At the time of the recall in 2019, Fisher-Price’s general manager Chuck Scothon said in a statement, “With these actions, we want parents around the world to know that safety will always be a cornerstone of our mission, that we are committed to these values, and will continue to prioritize the health, safety and well-being of the infants and preschoolers who utilize our products.”

Mattel and Fisher-Price have not responded to SheKnows‘ request for comment on if consumers can expect a recall.
